BMW 7 series: A one-year break in the case of gasoline production for Europe

The switch to WLTP, RDE, and OPF calls for another prominent victim: the diesel variants of the BMW 7-series (G11, G12) for the European market, according to the automotive week for some time not built. Citing a BMW spokesman, the journal reports that the diesel-7-series 740i, 750i and M760Li even be taken for a full year from the program.

Of the measure, only Europe is affected, because only here are the new requirements of the test cycle, the WLTP and the “Real Driving Emissions” (RDE). The related, more stringent limits in virtually all cases, a gasoline particulate filter (OPF) is necessary, the need to elaborate the already complex System for exhaust gas purification is integrated. The already very clean BMW Diesel are not affected by the change to the WLTP and RDE in the same dimensions and can be offered without interruption.

Even if the Diesel models 730d, 740d and 750d are the dominant engine for the BMW 7 series, also takes up a relevant part of the clientele for gasoline. In 2017, almost 30 percent of the in Germany sold 7 series were equipped with a gasoline engine, in other European markets, it looks similar. The bottom line is that in 2017, in Europe, were sold 3.540 BMW 7 series with a petrol engine.

The production interruption for a full year also means that soon the last of the BMW rolls 7-series G11 / G12 with petrol engines and without a Facelift from the Band. The production is taken up again, is already the BMW 7-series Facelift in 2019 in the sale, will be introduced this year.

In the last few weeks, we have already reported several times about the fact that in the course of the changeover to the WLTP and RDE, and the resulting coverage of the necessary retrofitting of petrol particles, some of the limitations of filters to European customers. So ends the production of the BMW M3 F80 for Europe a bit earlier than the Rest of the world, and also the production of the BMW M550i xDrive will be available for several months interrupted. Only last week we had to report that the conversion to the OPF’s also the end for the BMW M140i manual switch means. In addition to BMW, of course, other manufacturers of the necessary measures are concerned, a VW spokesman, the car confirmed mobile week also for Volkswagen, a “temporarily restricted product offer”.
