DTM 2018: No luck for BMW drivers in Zandvoort

Less successful as a traveling BMW Motorsport to the DTM hopes to race in Zandvoort. At the conclusion of the first half to the season, the BMW M4 DTM was not, exceptionally, to the absolute top and make it into any of the two races on the Podium. On Saturday, Mercedes was the clear dominant brand, and secured to a Four-Pole and a Four-fold victory, the points for the BMW-pilots were in the stands 6, 7, 8 and 9, a rather weak consolation.

Something better it looked on Sunday, because Philipp Eng drove his BMW M4 DTM to second place. In the race however, it was Audi driver René Rast, who drove from third on the grid to victory. Philipp Eng Pilot came up as the best BMW in fourth place to the finish, in addition, Augusto took Farfus and Timo Glock on the ranks 5 and 10 points for the championship.

In the overall standings of the weekend was in Zandvoort is also not a reason to celebrate for BMW. With a win on Saturday and a second place on Sunday was able to drive a Mercedes Pilot Gary Paffett clear to the top: He leads with 148 points, far ahead of Paul di Resta in a further Mercedes-AMG, the BMW-pilots Timo Glock and Marco Wittmann consequences of 101 and 98 points on the ranks 3 and 4 of the drivers ‘ standings. Also in the manufacturers ‘ standings, Mercedes has now got 547 points, ahead of BMW (358) and Audi (165).

Rudolf Dittrich (head of BMW Motorsport vehicle development): “Overall, we must be with this result, here in Zandvoort satisfied. After Qualifying, some of our drivers were in the race, difficult starting positions. Marco Wittmann and Bruno Spengler, who were brought by the external influence of the possible points. However, we have seen in the case of Philipp Eng and Augusto Farfus that we will be able to match the Pace of the top. Timo Glock was rewarded for his fighting spirit. In the end, we were able to collect with three vehicles points. Congratulations to René Rast and Audi to victory.“

Stefan Reinhold (team principal, BMW Team RMG): “It’s nice that we have achieved with Augusto again a good result. So it’s supposed to go in the second half of the season. Marco and Timo, it is not a delivery today in the Qualifying session to the optimum. We were in the race with all three cars on a good strategy. The incidents have thrown us then but back. Now we look but, as always, to the front. Everyone in the Team has also made here in Zandvoort a good Job.“

Marco Wittmann (#11 BMW Driving Experience, the M4 DTM, BMW Team RMG – Qualifying result: 12. Place Race Result: 17. Place, points: 98): “I had a good Start, the first round was in order. Of course twelve, we were able to work our way into the points. Despite the difficult starting position would have been quite counter. Unfortunately, me and Loic Duval at the Re has pushed Start to Edoardo Mortaras car. I stood on the brake, but we have us hooked. The consequence of this was damage to a tyre for me.“

Augusto Farfus (#15 Shell BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMG – Qualifying result: 8. Place Race Result: 5. Place, points: 22): “today We had a strong race. Finally, we managed to find a good compromise in the Balance. It is a pity, that happened to me in Qualifying a mistake. Otherwise it would have gone in the race, maybe even further forward. But this fifth place, I’ll take gladly.“

Timo Glock (#16 DEUTSCHE POST BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMR – Qualifying result: 17. Place Race Result: 10. Place, points: 101): “That wasn’t really our day today. In Qualifying, the Speed was actually good. However, we have lost due to any reasons in the last sector too much time. Therefore, we had to drive off of the back. At the Start the car went straight, then I went to the field afterwards. With a good strategy I was able to fight me but back to front. I have kept myself from the between cases, and so at least a point.“

Bart Mampaey (team principal, BMW Team RBM): “Firstly, congratulations to René Rast to victory. I think, in the case of Philip, we had a good overall package. Of course, it would have been nice to be on the Podium. We will try it at Brands Hatch again. The incident between Bruno and Jamie Green was unhappy. After Joel’s accident in free practice, it was not an easy race. This was not a total of our glorreichstes weekend, but we will be in Brands Hatch all the time.“

Philipp Eng (#25 SAMSUNG BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RMR – Qualifying result: 2. Place Race Result: 4. Place, points: 67): “Qualifying was with a starting place, of course, super. Especially after the Safety Car period I was also in the race really good on the go. The car was constant and good, I felt very comfortable. At this race pace, you can build on.“

Bruno Spengler (#7 BMW Bank M4 DTM, BMW Team RBM – Qualifying result: 7. Place Race Result: 13. Place, points: 43): “starting From position seven in there was certainly a lot more. Unfortunately, we have lost at the beginning of the race to the bottom. I was hit by Jamie Green and in the gravel, of course, has not helped. Now I’m going to chalk this race and look at Brands Hatch.“

Joel Eriksson (#47 BMW M4 DTM, BMW Team RBM – Qualifying result: 14. Place Race Result: 11. Place, points: 27): “For us, it was a tough weekend. Our strategy has not paid off today. Nevertheless, we were able to learn in the course of the weekend a lot. From this we will draw the right conclusions.“
